RE: Figuring Tongue Weight

Looking at this topic I ran some numbers on my tow vehicle.
My GVWR of vehicle is 7,300lbs.
Loaded truck is 6,280 lbs.
Based on this calculation are you saying that my max hitch weight should be 1,020 lbs?
My Hitch is rated for 895 lbs. hitch weight with weight distribution. My loaded trailer is right at 6,800 lbs. and I am trying to determine if my hitch weight is to much for my 895 max rating. How do I determine actual hitch weight of the trailer?

RE: Expedition Suspension Improvements

Yes, I am using weight distribution and also have dual cam sway control that has worked great.

Rockwood Length Question

I have a Rockwood 8298. Overall lenght is 31 feet but the actual length of the living area is more like 27 feet. I hear a lot of people referring to length and am not sure if it is overall length or living area?

Expedition Suspension Improvements

I have a ford Expedition and am pulling a Rockwood 8298 6,800 lb trailer loaded. The expedition seems to have enough power for our short trips but I am interested on what I can do to beef up the suspension. My hitch is rated for 890 lbs tongue weight and I am sure I am real close to that. I am interested in getting a bigger hitch but not sure if I would need to upgrade suspension as well? Any suggestions? I fugure I am right at the 80% rule with the expedition tow rating of 8600 lbs. and towing 6,800 lbs. Tongue weight is what I am most concerned with.

RE: Question about towing an 05 Cougar

Dan, I purchased a new Rockwood this year and it is 31' and weighs in at 6,400 lbs dry and around 6,900 lbs loaded. I am pulling it with a 2005 expedition 5.4. It actually pulls pretty well. I did purchase the dual cam sway system as I was very concerned with sway on this long of a trailer. I pull it right at 60mph and it does fine and only down shift on the bigger hills. Other than that I am able to keep speed up just fine. I am only getting 9 mpg when pulling it. The other concern I had was hitch weight and this is something you would want to check out.
Hope this helps but I think the Expedition would work OK for this trailer.

Slide Out Awning Topper

I am picking up my Rockwood travel trailer tomorrow and they are trying to sell me an awning topper for the slide out. Any opinions on whether this is needed or not?

RE: Rockwood 8298ss weight

How does the weight compare with the weight that shows on the inside of the trailer?

I have a Rockwood 8298SS on order and was wondering how people like their Rockwoods? I was very happy with many of the features that came on the trailer and we are very excited about our new trailer.

RE: More ques on towing capacity

I wanted to share with you my experience. For the last 3 years I have pulled a 27' Ultra Light travel trailer with a 2005 Trail Blazer. The truck was rated to pull 5,100 lbs. The trailer weighed 4,000 lbs UVW dry weight. GVWR on the trailer is right aroung 6,000 lbs. The trailer pulled great and I loaded it down with 4 bikes and gear. I fugured I was right at 4,800 to 5,000 lbs loaded.
Usually when I am pulling I try to make it as light as I can by emtying any water or waste before traveling.

RE: Sway Control

Thanks everyone for the input. I definitely think I am going to go with the dual cam. If I already have the setup for the friction bar as well would there be any benefit to using both the dual cam and the friction bar or would that be more than I need?
Once I get the dual cam setup is there a lot of adjustment that is needed from time to time?

Sway Control

I have purchased a 30' trailer and have a weight distribution system from my last trailer with friction sway control. My last trailer was a Surveyor ultra light 27' I am a little worried about sway with my new trailer since I will be pulling it with short wheelbase 5.4 Expedition. Can I install a dual cam sway control with my existing setup. My trunnion bars are not the spring type and are rectangular on the end by the chains (quality S brand)
Any suggestions on how I can control sway without having to invest in a whole new weight distribution hitch? Since I normall only travel a couple hours away from home would the friction type be OK?

Travel Trailer Towing with 2005 Expedition

I am considering purchasing a new travel trailer and looking for some advice on pulling a 30 foot travel trailer with an 2005 5.4 Expedition. This is a Rockwood light weight trailer that has dry weight of 6200 lbs.
Anyone have any input for me on how this might pull? I usually pull locally max of 3 hours away.
